Don’t Just Do Something ~ Sit There
We have been taught to fill every moment of our lives. The technology that is available today is supposed to give us more free time, but with every new opening available we are compelled to fill the space. Often we fill them so full that we don’t even have time to eat. We don’t have time to breath right. We don’t have time to… There are so many opportunities that we have to fill every moment of our lives and yet we each know that we are in constant overload and we must do something about it. But what?
When was the last time that you just sat down without any external stimuli? When you took a vacation? Probably not. That is, unless you went to a secluded island without any electricity. At this very moment can you turn everything off and just sit for 10 minutes without your mind racing to the next thing that you have planned? Probably not. But if you could and you made it a habit, you would be adding years to your life. You would be keeping the lines from your face longer and you would be able to concentrate on your next task with more clarity.
How can you begin to empty your mind to just sit there and do nothing? Everyone tells us we must do this, but how? My mind races from the minute I open my eyes in the morning, even before caffeine. So how can we expect our minds to stop and be quiet? It’s easy once you start but you must make a 10 day commitment. If you don’t then you won’t have trained yourself into a new habit, and you’ll just get frustrated and give up.
Here’s a simple technique that will get you started. First sit in a chair with your back away from the chair back so that your spine is straight. Next connect your tongue to the top of your mouth, close your eyes, and exhale everything from your lungs. Then inhale and hold for 1 count then exhale, doing this 5 times. Bring your hands up in front of you and bless the earth for peace, hope, faith, love, light, and joy. Do this for about 3 minutes then inhale deeply and hold for a moment. A smile is very helpful at this point. Then bring your hands down and say to yourself I fully and completely let go. If a thought pops into your head imagine that you’re putting it into a file drawer that you’ll open later. Once you have spent 3 or 4 minutes quietly, inhale to bring your attention back and smile when you open your eyes. You’ll like this so much that it will become easier and easier every day.
This brief technique is so powerful in allowing you to handle stress, have more clarity every day, and allow your body that time of peace that it requires in our waking hours. Your energy level will have increased and the ability to handle more tasks will be more obvious as you continue to do practice this every day. People may begin telling you how nice you look and ask what you are doing that is different. So don’t just do something, sit there ~ Now that you know how.
